One of the questions I get on a very regular basis is: “How do I know when to trust other people?”

Here’s the honest answer: we don’t trust people who are identified with their ego. We’re bound to be disappointed. Instead of focusing on that, we learn to focus on having holy relationships and working with the Holy Spirit to see where we’re clinging to the special relationship.

A Course in Miracles tells us something magnificent: God has salvation helpers. Billions of them. Everywhere we go, our salvation helpers are there.

Our brothers and sisters are not going to rescue us.

They will help us see what our thinking is.
They will help us take responsibility.
They will help us work at the level of the mind.
That’s how they become our salvation helpers.

When we enter into relationships thinking that people are going to save us, rescue us, validate us – that’s a form of self-betrayal. We’ve all done it. Gosh, haven’t we all done it?

The thing is to forgive ourselves for having done it.

Think about those ten years spent in a relationship trying to please someone who was unpleasable. Trying so hard to make it work when it was never going to work the way we wanted it to. We feel like we wasted our precious life. We invested in someone who truly did not appreciate the gift we were sharing.

The way out of that pain is true forgiveness.

What do we have to forgive? That we betrayed ourselves by thinking somebody else was going to make our life worthwhile. That they were going to be our special friend who made our life worth living. That if we just gave enough, we’d finally get that validation, that love, that approval that we desperately needed.

None of that is how it works.

A Course in Miracles reminds us: “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.”

Everything works together for our good – and there are no exceptions, even the relationships that felt like the biggest waste of our life.

Relationships are the most useful tool for our awakening.

We learn to see our brothers and sisters as salvation helpers, not rescuers, and we’re grateful.

LATEST ACIM PODCAST EPISODE: I Am Healed – Not I Will Be Healed Are you still saying “I will be healed” – and wondering why healing never arrives? In this episode, I share something I’ve been practicing for nearly 20 years that changed everything for me: a small word change in how I pray. I explore Chapter 26, Section 9 of A Course in Miracles – “For They Have Come” – and what it means that our healing has already arrived, that we don’t have to wait. I also get honest about my own journey from believing I was evil and unredeemable to feeling lit up with love. And I share why the people who treated me the most cruelly may have actually helped me awaken. If you’ve been waiting for something to change, this episode might show you it already has. We’re rising up!
