Somebody asked me this week about processing feelings. Is it good to process them? What do I think about that?
It’s such a good question. For me, processing my feelings and my thoughts meant trying to figure something out, trying to understand them. And trying to understand things is what the ego-identified person does.
I’ve learned that it’s not helpful to me.
It’s very time-consuming, very energy-consuming, and not ultimately productive – because I don’t wish to make decisions based on my ego identity. I’m interested in going to Spirit and receiving divine insight and clarity from the Higher Holy Spirit Self.
One of the primary ways I used to “process” my feelings was through talking with friends – telling them the story of what happened, what I thought about it, what my options were. I used to do that for hours and hours, truly.
What a time suck.
Did I get any benefit? I’d find a reduction in my upset. But it didn’t bring me the Peace of mind and the results that I now get from laying it on the altar and saying to Spirit, “You let me know what I’m to do and what I’m to say, and I’ll do that.”
Here’s the thing, though – that method requires trust. That’s why trust is the number one characteristic of God’s Teachers.
We’re not going to put something on the altar and leave it there until we get a response if we don’t have trust.
I couldn’t lay things on the altar and leave them there. I was always grabbing them back. I’d put it on the altar – “God, help me with this” – and then an hour later, I’m trying to figure it out again.
A Course in Miracles reminds us: “Seek not to change the world, but to change your mind about the world.”
Spiritual practice saves time.
It truly does. When we go to Spirit for our answers instead of endlessly processing, the insights come – sometimes what we already had in mind, sometimes something completely unexpected. Either way, it’s a simple realization: the most loving thing to do is stop struggling and learn to trust.
In my Masterful Living Program, we practice building that trust together. And in our FREE Forgiveness Workshops, we practice laying burdens on the altar – and leaving them there.
