Joel Goldsmith tells this story that completely shifted how I see every problem:

As children, you play games with chalk marks on the sidewalk. Someone chases you into a square, and you can’t get out until you pay a forfeit. But what keeps you in? Just a chalk mark. The rules of the game say you must remain, so you do.

Would it not be tragic if the other children went home and you felt you couldn’t step out? Yet all you’d need to do is step across those lines.

Jesus Saw Only Chalk Marks

When Jesus healed people, he saw what was really there—nothing inhibiting the person. Just chalk marks.

Our belief in the rules of human life that say “under certain conditions, you may be paralyzed, sick, or lacking.” People had accepted these rules as fact, as truth, when in Reality they were just concepts.

When we invest our belief in an illusion, a false idea, then it’s a wrong decision.

But Jesus saw only chalk marks, the belief in the illusion.  The illusion has no power.

God is the only power.

In his conviction that nothing was hindering them, they got up and walked. To Lazarus, he said, “Lazarus, come forth,” and Lazarus came forth. What was hindering him? The belief in the rules of the game of human life.

Your Current Chalk Marks

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, they said she had three months to live. I didn’t believe it. I could feel it was three to five years. How? I don’t know. I could just feel it. She lived three more years.

A Course in Miracles tells us: “Wrong decisions have no power because they are not true. The imprisonment they seem to produce is no more true than they are.”

What chalk marks are keeping you prisoner?

  • “I can’t forgive that”
  • “This relationship is beyond repair”
  • “I’ll never be financially free”
  • “My family will always be dysfunctional”

Skip Across That Line

Quantum Spiritual healing often has far greater success with “incurable” diseases than curable ones. Why? Because when someone says “I’ve done all I can,” we finally become receptive to the spiritual impulse.

In my Masterful Living Program, we learn to see these chalk marks for what they are—nothing. Just agreements we made not to see what’s Real, not to know what’s true, not to love without conditions.

The only requirement for freedom? Skip across that line. And why not? What is hindering you? A belief? A theory?

When you recognize it as just a belief, all the chalk lines begin to disappear and you are free.

LATEST ACIM PODCAST EPISODE:  In this episode, God Doesn’t Punish You (You Do),I reveal how the belief that God punishes us is completely false—it’s our own projection of guilt and shame that creates all punishment in our lives. I share my decades-long pattern of using alcohol, food, and other self-destructive behaviors to keep myself feeling guilty and reinforce the belief that I was fundamentally bad and sinful, a pattern I finally recognized came from centuries of religious teaching about being unworthy sinners. Through A Course in Miracles teachings from Chapter 3 and Lesson 189, I explain the “law of seeing”—that we perceive outside what we feel inside, so when we feel God’s love within us, we see a loving world, but when we feel self-hatred, we see only fear. As we complete this 9-year cycle, I’m inviting everyone to join me in releasing these ancient patterns of guilt and self-punishment before we begin fresh in 2026.
