For years, I lived in a fortress of my own making. Always defending, always anticipating attack, always ready for battle.

I felt inspired by A Course in Miracles  Lesson 190: “I choose the joy of God instead of pain.” And here’s what struck me: I’d been so invested in protecting myself from pain that I’d forgotten there was another choice entirely.

“It is a nightmare of abandonment by an Eternal Love, which could not leave the Son whom It created out of love.”(ACIM W-190.2)

I always felt I was going to be attacked because I believed something was deeply wrong with me. So I stayed defended – judging others before they could judge me, leaving before I could be left, attacking before I could be hurt.

Here’s what helped me see it correctly: The safest place for me to reside is in my loving heart, wide open where anyone can see, and having no shame.

No judgments about where I am. No meaning-making. No interpretations.

When I stopped defending against imaginary attacks, something miraculous happened. The attacks stopped coming. Because I wasn’t inviting them anymore through my own defensive energy.

In my Masterful Living Program we practice dropping our shields and opening our hearts. It feels vulnerable at first, but it’s actually the safest thing we can do.  What happens is that, because we’re all pracitcing non-judgment, people release so much shame and fear.  They don’t have to defend themselves anymore and they can say what they’re feeling and thinking without fear of attack.
