“You’re my port in the storm. You’re my comfort in the storm. You’re my shelter in the storm. You validate me. You complete me.”

That’s how I describe a special relationship. It’s the idea that someone out there is going to make us whole.

Special relationships come in many forms, but they’re all the same. We can have one with a grandchild, a friend, a co-worker. We can even have a special relationship with our dog, though I don’t know that the dog can have one with us!

Here’s the truth. We’re already complete.

We’re all one, and we always have been and always will be. The completion has never been interrupted. We can feel incomplete when we cherish special relationships, and then we’ll always feel incomplete.

How crazy is that? The very thing we choose to complete us keeps us feeling empty.

A Course in Miracles puts it so directly: “If you seek love outside yourself you can be certain that you perceive hatred within, and are afraid of it.“

Where is the storm, then? We might think it’s out in the world. It’s actually within. It’s the hatred within that we’re running from. We can run, but we can’t hide from it, and we know that. That’s why we seek so many special relationships to drown out the storm.

When we seek shelter as a way of coping with and managing the fear, we’re constantly making the storm real.

That only keeps it going, and it brings more and more suffering.

I’ve known people who felt desperately alone, and it was horrible for them. What they didn’t seem to realize was that the aloneness was in their mind. That feeling came from the barriers to Love.

The same passage goes on: “Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only from its reality.“

The end of suffering is the end of these barriers to Love.

We don’t need another shelter. We need to find what we’ve built against Love and offer it to the Higher Holy Spirit Self. That’s our way out of suffering.

If you’d like to see where you’ve been seeking shelter instead of Love, join me for the How to Love Freely Deep Dive Workshop on Saturday, where we’ll bring those barriers into the Light together.

The storm was never out there. Neither is the Love. The kingdom of Love is within.

If you’d like support for opening to Love more fully, I’d love to invite you join me for my How to Love Freely Deep Dive Workshop this Saturday, October 3.  Love is our healer and we can allow more Love into our life and heart.  It’s easier than we think.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: Make No Decisions by Yourself So many of us carefully choose our days and still end them feeling disappointed. We weigh the options, even ask for guidance, and then the answer feels wrong. A student’s breakthrough and a friend’s reminder brought me back to Chapter 30, Section I of A Course in Miracles. You’ll discover what a neighbor home from the hospital and a party that fell flat reveal, why a small tightening in my stomach mattered, and the surprising reason inner guidance can feel like an attack.
