A Course in Miracles tells us, we are God’s treasure. Not our accomplishments, not our bank accounts, not anything we own. WE are the treasure, you and me. Our very being is what God values above all else.
In the Course’s retelling of the prodigal son story, Jesus reveals something we may have overlooked even though we’ve heard and read the story many times: the father didn’t care about the squandered inheritance. That didn’t matter to the father at all. Now, remember this was a parable that Jesus told, not a story of someone he knew, but a story of everyone he knew, each of us.
The son himself was the treasure. The father wanted nothing else but his child’s return. Now, in my life, I’ve known a number of parents whose children left home and disappeared, for years, and in some ways did feel lost to their parents. And, indeed, all the parents wished for was their child’s return.
The Creator of the universe treasures YOU.
Here’s what struck me during contemplation – we’re all living out “savior of the world” stories. Think about our beloved movies: Neo in The Matrix, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz. These stories captivate us because they reflect our true purpose. We ARE meant to be saviors through joining with the Holy Spirit and seeing Christ in everyone.
Our holiness bless the world and it saves the world.
But here’s the kicker that used to make me uncomfortable – EVERYONE is equally valuable to God. The person who hurts others is as precious to God as Mother Teresa. When we can’t accept this, we can’t understand anything. I know, it’s challenging! But this is the key to freedom.
I spent decades in confusion, wondering why life was so hard. Then I realized: when you accept that you’re God’s treasure, when you see everyone’s equal value, the confusion lifts. You understand your function is simply to create and extend love – whether through cooking a meal, teaching a class, or offering a smile.
The journey to God is “a journey without distance to a goal that has never changed.” You’re already home. You’ve always been God’s treasure. Now it’s time for us to live like it.
NEW ACIM PODCAST EPISODE:my topic is You ARE the Treasure: Why God Values You Above Everything Else. Exploring “The Treasure of God” from A Course in Miracles Chapter 8, I share the profound revelation that WE are God’s only treasure – not money or worldly things, but us. Through Jesus’s retelling of the prodigal son story and my reflection on how movies like The Matrix, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings all feature “savior of the world” themes, I realized we’re all meant to be saviors through joining with the Holy Spirit and seeing Christ in everyone. The key to moving from confusion to clarity is accepting that EVERYONE is equally valuable to God – from the worst person imaginable to Mother Teresa – and understanding that God’s will is our will, there’s no separation. Our function is to create and extend love in whatever form that takes, whether cooking a meal or teaching a class, and when we accept our true value as God’s treasure, we can finally live in the peace and freedom that is our birthright!
