Here’s something that completely shifted my life.

For years, I walked with what A Course in Miracles calls “dark companions.” Anger was a constant companion. Grievances always seemed to find me.  Fear rode shotgun everywhere I went.

I thought this was just life. I thought everyone lived that way.

The Companions You Don’t Have to Keep

Here’s what Jesus tells us in ACIM: “Fear and grief are your guests and they go with you and abide with you on the way.” But then He adds this life-changing truth: “The dark journey is not the way of God’s Son.”

These dark companions-sadness, anger, resentment, hurt, fear, doubt, worry, shame, blame, regrets-they’re not fit companions for us.

Why? Because we are the Light of the world.

I know, I know. When we’re deep in the darkness, being told we’re the Light feels like a cruel joke.

A Choice That Made a BIG Difference in My Life

Every morning, we choose our companions for the day. Will it be the darkness of unworthiness? Or will it be Jesus, Buddha, Kuan Yin, Mother Mary, the angels, the ascended masters?

You can’t walk with both. Trust me, I tried for years. I’d go to spiritual workshops all day, feel amazing, then come home and get drunk because I didn’t believe I could hold that vibration.

How to Change Your Guest List

Here’s what worked for me: When I felt the dark companions approaching, I’d literally say out loud: “Holy Spirit, help me now. Jesus, I join with you.”

No complicated process. No lengthy prayer. Just the willingness to choose different companions.

The darkness has no power except what we give it through our attention. The moment we withdraw that attention-poof. It dissolves like morning mist.

Your Mighty Companions Await

This is exactly what we practice in Masterful Living-learning to recognize and release the dark companions while inviting the mighty companions of Light to walk with us.

You were created of Light and in Light. The dark companions were never meant for you.

They’re not your friends. They’re not protecting you. They’re just habits you can change.

Starting right now.

Self-sabotage shows up in so many ways. For some of us it’s procrastination, putting off the very thing that would help us most. For others it’s playing small, holding back our gifts, getting in our own way right when things start going well, or being so hard on ourselves that nothing we do ever feels good enough. And for many of us it’s self-medication, reaching for food, a drink, the phone, or busyness to escape how we’re feeling. The forms are endless, but here’s what I’ve come to know: it’s never really about the behavior, it’s about the beliefs underneath it, and those we can heal at the root. That’s why I’d love for you to join me for my End My Self-Sabotage Challenge, beginning Sunday, June 28. We’ll bring these patterns out of the dark and into the Light together, in a community where there’s no judgment, only Love. The first week is my gift to you, so come and experience it for yourself. Trust your intuition. If it’s right for you right now, you’ll know.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: Forgiving Our Fathers My father and I used to have intense arguments. Slamming doors. Years of it. I carried a story for a long time that something was wrong with me, and I’m guessing you’ve carried something similar. With Father’s Day coming up, I sat with A Course in Miracles Text Chapter 1 and let myself walk back through it. What I found surprised me. What if the practice we keep hoping our parents will hand us is one we get to use ourselves, today?
