A Course in Miracles names three faces of self-doubt.

  • A fear of weakness and vulnerability.
  • A fear of failure and shame tied to a sense of inadequacy.
  • A guilty embarrassment stemming from false humility.

What is false humility?

False humility is when a person seems humble, but is actually egotistical in a very particular sense.

The sense of thinking of themselves as not good enough.

Catch this, because it turns everything upside down.

That’s egotism.

To believe we’re not good enough. To believe something is wrong with us. To believe we’re unlovable. That’s the ego thought system talking, dressed up in modest clothing.  It’s the same mechanism as you’re better than me. God is so much better than me. They’re more saintly than I am.

All of that is false humility.

We’re all the Christ. Fundamentally, we’re all part of God, all the same. The idea that someone is more than and someone is less than is the thing we forgot to laugh about.

That’s the error.

Here’s the good news that A Course in Miracles offers about mistakes: the form of the mistake isn’t important. What’s important is only the recognition of a mistake as a mistake.

If we make mistakes and we can see them as misperceptions, then they aren’t crimes. They aren’t sins.  They’re just errors waiting to be corrected.  When we’re living in that space of false humility, when there’s embarrassment and there’s shame, what’s really present is a confusion about our identity. We’ve deceived ourselves about who we are.

The opportunity is to turn it over to the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes we only do that because it gets so uncomfortable we can’t stand it anymore.

That’s a good thing. That’s a really good thing.

It takes practice.  Practice brings results.

This is the work we do together month after month inside my Masterful Living Program. Not a single insight. A whole year of practice, until the not-good-enough story simply stops being ours.

We’re all the same. Let’s stop pretending otherwise.

No one is better, no one is lesser, all is one.

SEPTEMBER: How about some free classes with great ACIM teachers?  Living A Course in Miracles: Release the Worry, Rest in Trust is open for registration now!  Worry isn’t natural. It’s a habit, and habits can be dissolved when we’re truly willing. That’s what we’re doing together September 10 through 13 in my FREE series. 5 teachers, 8 classes, 4 days, and every one of us has walked through the worry ourselves and come out the other side. We’ll look at what worry actually is in the mind, why willpower has never once dissolved it, and how to hand the future over so we can rest even while life is still unresolved. Not denial. Not pretending we’re fine. A real change of mind. It’s FREE, and I’d love to have you with us. Register now so you don’t forget at powerofloveministry.net/Release

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: I Took God to Couples Therapy with Neda Boin.  We can put ourselves through so much and call it devotion. The harder it gets, the more committed we think we are. Neda Boin lived that for years, and when she finally sat down with God about it, what surfaced wasn’t the thing she’d been trying to fix. It was sitting one layer underneath, and it’s the layer almost none of us look at. If you’re forgiving faithfully and peace still hasn’t come, this is the one I’d like you to hear.
