Many of us carry wounds that feel impossible to forgive. A betrayal. A hurt that came from someone we trusted. It can seem as though what happened is a terrible mistake that can never be undone.
The story of Joseph from the bible (with his “technicolor dreamcoat”) offers another view. His brothers threw him into a well and left him for dead. Years later, when they came before him and feared his anger, he told them that what they meant for evil, God meant for good.
Joseph didn’t hold the betrayal against his brothers. He let go of the meaning he had given it. He moved on, and his life opened to service and to the gifts of God. He became prosperous beyond what he could have imagined, and he was such a loving, caring person he reached out and made sure his family, including the brothers who intended to murder him, were saved from the famine.
The prodigal son tells a similar story. Living in the muck and the mire, filled with shame and hunger, the son finally realizes he can return to his father’s house as a servant and have a better life.
These stories are our stories.
We’ve all wandered like the prodigal son, and we’ve all felt the pain of holding on to what hurt us. When we’re willing to let go of the meaning we have given our wounds, we find our way home.
And, for me, one of the keys to understanding both of these stories is that they saw that they could be of service, and that would bring an improvement in their life.
We can all serve the Light.
We see these truths played out in movies and television, too. When people choose to forgive, bitterness begins to loosen. Compassion grows. What once seemed unforgivable becomes a doorway to a better life.
Projecting our anger outward will never save us. It only hurts us more.
We can choose love today, even if we don’t yet know the way home. Choosing is the first step, and Spirit does the rest.
As A Course in Miracles tells us: “Forgiveness offers everything I want.”

NEW PODCAST EPISODE: Alan Cohen: A Glitch in the Matrix In this episode, I’m talking with my dear friend Alan Cohen about his latest book, A Glitch in the Matrix. Borrowing from the movie, Alan calls the matrix the collective illusion built on separation, lack, and fear. A glitch is any moment that cracks it open. He says the way out is inner, and when we stop identifying with our personality, the matrix becomes our servant instead of our master. His closing message: “Your greatest contribution to a peaceful world is to be at peace.” Pull up a chair.
