I used to give to get. That was my normal way of being. I did nothing unless I believed something would come back to me, whether that was appreciation, recognition, respect, or money.
Giving in order to get isn’t loving. It’s control and manipulation. We give our love, our time, and our energy, and when the thank you or the admiration does not come, resentment rises up.
Here’s an experience that helped me see this clearly. Someone I love was upset because I forgot to say thank you for something they’d done. The truth is I had felt gratitude in my heart. I simply had not spoken the words, and that was enough to upset them.
At first, I felt a bit of resentment. Why did they need to hear the thank you? Then I recognized what was happening. They were giving to get. They needed to hear the words so they could feel their giving had been worth it.
That was a mirror for me. I saw my own old pattern.
I still forget sometimes to say thank you. I feel the gratitude, and I believe others can feel it too because I’m beaming it out, but I forget to say those 2 words.
Love and gratitude doesn’t have to be announced to be real.
What healed my mind was a new practice. Instead of strings attached to everything, I recognize that everything I give, I give to God, and everything I receive, I receive from God. God is all there is. There’s no other place to give to and no other place to receive from.
When we give from that place, the balance doesn’t matter. Whether it seems I give more to one person and receive more from another, it’s all the same source, and it’s all the flow of giving and receiving with God.
