A Course in Miracles tells us that pain is a wrong perspective.
Not perception. Perspective.
When we have a wrong perspective, we will have a wrong perception. The perception is downstream. The perspective is the cause of the pain.
So what’s the perspective that causes pain?
It’s identification with the body. It’s feeling separate. It’s false identification.
When we’re falsely identified with the body, believing we’re separate from divinity, we’re going to feel some kind of pain. Physical pain. Emotional pain. Mental pain. Maybe all three.
Here’s the path it travels.
Pain starts in the mind. When we begin believing thoughts that aren’t true, we feel mentally agitated. If we don’t correct our thinking and heal our mind, that agitation travels into the emotional body to help us wake up.
I call that mental and emotional upset the divine alarm clock.
We feel agitated, irritated, and upset whenever we’re believing thoughts that aren’t true, whenever we’re falsely identified.
The alarm goes off. Danger, danger, danger, Will Robinson. Correct your thinking.
If we don’t perceive the alarm at the mental and emotional levels, the warning travels into our physical body.
This is how pain is generated. Through those channels.
Which means our feelings are not our enemy.
Denying our feelings isn’t remotely helpful. Our feelings are the divine alarm clock going off, alerting us to our false beliefs, so that we can hand over to the Holy Spirit for healing. Our feelings are incredibly helpful. Without them we’d be lost in time and space forever with little hope of waking up.
The problem was never the feeling.
The problem is what we do next.
When I’m identified with the ego thought system, why would I try to find the solution to my suffering there? Why would I try to resolve my pain by chasing a fix in the world of effects, or by finding someone to dive into the misery with me?
None of that is going to be helpful.
The healing goes to the root cause, which is the belief.
Forgiveness is how we get to the root. That’s the whole practice of my FREE Forgiveness Workshops, and if you’d like a place to bring what the alarm clock is waking up in you, you’re warmly invited.
When the alarm goes off, that’s not failure. That’s the invitation.
