I’d like to share the most painful belief I ever carried, and how releasing it transformed not just my life, but my entire approach to healing others.
For most of my life, I believed I was fundamentally bad. Not just imperfect or flawed – but fundamentally, inextricably, unfixably bad. This belief created a ceiling on my spiritual growth and kept me playing small for years.
I thought, “I can’t be that good. I’m not that good a person.” This wasn’t humility – it was self-attack disguised as spiritual modesty. And it was keeping me from stepping into my divine calling as a healer and teacher.
The irony was devastating: I wanted to serve others, to be a light in the world, but I secretly believed I was too dark, too broken, too fundamentally flawed to be worthy of that calling. I felt like a fraud every time I tried to help someone else.
But here’s what changed everything: I started working with counseling clients, and I made a commitment to see everyone who came to me as perfect, whole, complete, and beautiful.
And you know what? I could see it. Despite all their struggles, all their pain, all their apparent problems – I could see their fundamental goodness shining through.
That’s when it hit me: if I can see the divine perfection in everyone else, maybe – just maybe – I’m not the one exception to God’s perfect creation. Maybe what’s true for them is also true for me.
A Course in Miracles teaches that God is good, and since God is in all of us, we must all be fundamentally good. This isn’t wishful thinking or spiritual bypassing – it’s the truth about our divine nature.
I made a decision that day to “put all my eggs in that basket” – that we are all fundamentally good without exception.
And you know what? It felt true. More than that, it felt like coming home to myself for the first time.
The moment I shifted from “I’m fundamentally bad” to “I’m fundamentally good,” everything changed.
My confidence as a counselor, minister and teacher soared. My effectiveness in helping others multiplied. My joy and peace expanded exponentially. It was a relief to let go of suffering.
If you’re a healer who’s been playing small because you secretly believe you’re not good enough, I invite you to consider this: What if your fundamental nature is goodness itself? What if your apparent flaws and struggles are just temporary clouds covering the sun of your divine identity?
You are not the exception to God’s perfect love.
You are the expression of it.
Time to let yourself shine?

NEW ACIM PODCAST EPISODE: my topic is You’re Not Evil – You’re Just Playing Small (And Here’s How to Stop) In this episode, I shared how I used to feel fundamentally limited and evil, believing there was some immovable block preventing my spiritual growth, when the truth was I was simply playing small and denying my divine inheritance. Working with A Course in Miracles Lesson 166 (“I am entrusted with the gifts of God”), I discovered that God’s trust in us is limitless even when our trust in God is minimal, and that we must unite our will with God’s will to receive and recognize the pre-installed gifts that are already ours. I emphasized that we’re not victims but dreamers of the dream, and that taking responsibility for our creative power – rather than hiding from it – transforms us from tragic wanderers into servants in our Father’s house who hold the high watch for all humanity.
