“You never do enough! You never get these things done!”

Sound familiar? That’s the voice of the tyranny of the to-do list.

Many people live under this constant criticism from what should be just a simple organizing tool. But somehow that innocent list has become a tyrant that’s always taunting them to do more, more, more.

Here’s what helped me see this correctly: I realized that many to-do lists are actually ego wish lists that are completely unreasonable.

We pile things on like we’re superhuman. Then at the end of the day, no matter how much we accomplished, we feel like failures.

That’s an ego trap.

The ego loves to set us up for failure. It loves to make us feel inadequate. So it whispers: “Just add one more thing… and one more thing… and one more thing…”

Pretty soon we’re carrying around this impossible list that guarantees we’ll feel bad about ourselves.

But here’s the thing: You don’t have to live this way.

I rarely have a to-do list anymore. In fact, I made one yesterday, and I totally forgot to look at it today. And you know what? Life went on just fine.

If you’re a to-do list person, consider this:

Only put on your to-do list what you will forget to do if you don’t write it down. That’s it.

Everything else? Trust that if it’s important, you’ll remember. And if you don’t remember, maybe it wasn’t that important after all.

Here’s what I do instead:

I ask myself: “What would feel fulfilling today?” Not “What should I do?” but “What would bring joy and meaning?”  Develop a to BE list instead. To be loving, to be patient, like that.

Sometimes I plan to run errands, then think: “Is that really going to be fulfilling? Or is that going to feel empty?”

If it feels empty, I don’t do it.

This isn’t about being irresponsible. It’s about choosing consciously instead of being driven by ego demands.

The difference is profound.

When Love guides your choices instead of ego pressure, you end up doing things that actually matter.

Things that nourish your soul. Things that make a real difference.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE:  All Hatred is Self-Hatred What if the thing you’re most afraid of isn’t pain, loss, or suffering?

In this episode, I turn to one of the most startling passages in A Course in Miracles – Chapter 13: The Fear of Redemption – and what I found there is not what I expected. With so much hatred, division, and disinformation swirling in the world right now, I share a raw and honest post I wrote about my own experience with rage – and the connection I’ve discovered between self-hatred and everything we see playing out around us.

I explore a line from the ACIM Text explaining that we’re not actually afraid of what we think we’re afraid of. Something much deeper – and much more beautiful – is what we’re really running from.

I also share the single moment in my mid-twenties that changed everything for me – one sentence I heard myself say to myself. If you’ve been feeling the weight of the world, come join me. There’s a way through – and it might surprise you.
