A Course in Miracles Lesson 5 tells us: “I am never upset for the reason I think.” This lesson has been so helpful to me in learning to see the world in another way. I go back to it time and time again and there was a period in my life where I probably told myself this truth 100 times a day.
Think about my friend whose car was being towed and she was so upset with the driver of the tow truck. She could have said:
- I’m not angry at the tow truck driver for the reason I think.
- I’m not afraid of having to pay this money for the reason I think.
- I’m not depressed for the reason I think.
Doing this practice is profoundly helpful – and it’s easy.
Where does the upset really come from? It comes from fear. What’s the fear about? We could say it’s about not having enough money, or blowing a hole in the budget for the month. But that’s really not it.
The real fear is: I’m afraid I’m not supported by the universe. I have a limited supply, and it’s being depleted. I’m outside the flow of Love and abundance.
That’s what’s underneath all of it.
“People are demanding money, and I have to pay it, and the only reason I have to pay it is because I did something wrong. I did something stupid – there’s a judgment. It cost all this money. It caused this hassle for my friends. I’m going to be late. My boss is going to be upset.”
So much proof emanating from one situation that I’m bad. I’m wrong. I’m stupid. I’m foolish.
All of these reasons – yep. Every single one – piled on top of one original false belief.
This Workbook Lesson also tells us: “There are no small upsets. They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.”
When we’re upset, we so often start listing the details and getting into righteous anger and judgment. We need to prove that we’re right. I’ve done that a million times. I won’t say I don’t do it anymore. But now I can relax into gratitude that I can practice. I can change my mind.
The truth I’ve come to see and know absolutely is that I am never upset for the reason I think.
This is how we can see the world differently. All of our programs at the Power of Love Ministry are about changing our mind, and trading our false beliefs for what’s true – because the truth actually does liberate us from our self-imposed suffering.

LATEST PODCAST EPISODE: We Don’t Have to Suffer For years, I’d say I believed in God, then in the same breath I’d also believe someone was a sinner, or that I was being punished. Many of us do this. We don’t notice the contradiction because everyone we know carries it too. Then we wonder why we feel judged, why joy keeps slipping, why depression sneaks in. This week I sat with A Course in Miracles, Text Chapter 10, the section on the Denial of God. What if the door we’ve been knocking on, we’ve also been holding shut?
